Online Relationships: Beware!
Growing up in the late 1990’s and early part of the 21st century, the ever-popular Nigerian Scam Artists are synonymous with email, unsuspecting technological changes, and often remind us of “little old ladies” who have bought their first laptop to email their grandchildren getting taken advantage of by the Prince of Nairobi.
The Nigerian Scam Artist operates on a simple principle; a desperate person contacts you for help. they need to move some money – usually around $10 million – and if you can help them you can receive a percentage of this money -$100,000 or more – for your trouble. Just send some money to pay some fees, or cash a check they will send to you and the cash will suddenly appear. Wire them your account numbers and send the funds through the wire service they suggest. Simple, right?
As we’ve become more savvy to email scams, scammers have become more savvy to our online usage. No more do you receive emails from long lost cousins or desperate diplomats. Like most of your 20-something friends, scammers have turned to online dating.
“Hi, you look very pretty. I would like to talk online.” they start. A conversation starts. An online relationship is formed. Suddenly they are stuck in a country and in need of a few hundred dollars. If only you can help them this once they will pay you back when they get home on Monday. Just send them your information.
Same tactics, different medium. Online dating has become such a mainstream service to America that even the scammers are using it. We’re all on it – from 18 year olds in college to newly divorced 60-somethings. Widowers, workaholics, lawyers, college students, PhD’s, teachers, bankers, busboys. Online dating is the new internet medium of our time, and it’s clearly here to stay.
