But why does this happen ever so often?

The truth is, a lot of people find it difficult to date and put themselves out there. That is why they rather not date but they also wish to find that special someone they can be with. Nobody wants to be rejected and to prevent rejection; they bend the true image of themselves a little or a lot. But does this really pay?

Almost always, it does not. Once a person sees you for the person you really are, and not what you showed them online, they will immediately before disinterested. Interestingly enough, almost all who have done this will tell you it’s not the fact that they were different in person, but the fact that they lied about their image. That says many things without words: the person is insecure, the person has the ability to lie about anything, the person is not confident, may have low self-esteem; so many other negative attributes could be listed.

Waiting to meet the Investment Banker in person definitely made it that much more exciting to finally see him. The Amazing Disappearing Date

I would like to address that scenario that has probably happened to each and every one of us where the person we’re dating just poof! Disappears.

Typically, in my own personal experience, a person whom you’ve been dating seemingly drops from the face of the planet when you think that things are going well. The one time in my life that this has ever happened to me was in high school. A guy I had started seeing tried to talk me into intercourse (which at 15 I just felt a wee bit too young for) and then the following week, with no warning or explanation whatsoever, poof!, gone. In fact his father joined in (which now that I’m an adult I find to be incredibly childish) by telling me every time that I called that his son was in the bathroom in one form or another. Either he was showering, or peeing, etc. After a few calls where he was always in the loo I took it as my cue to move on, but being a 15 year old girl and accepting that type of rejection and lack of closure is beyond difficult, even having the best intentions. Anyway, I survived, but the whole thing left me decidedly bitter and a little wearier of men in general. My point here is this: breaking up with a person is never fun but as a human being with general regard for other human beings it’s your duty to suck it up and say good-bye. You shouldn’t assume that a person will just fall apart because you break up with them either: you might find that they accept it quite well, in particularly if you haven’t been seeing each other for very long.

Everyone, no matter how annoying or incompatible, deserves to have closure.

No one ever said that being in a committed and loving relationship was easy. Just like most other things in life anything worth doing takes work.

That being said, it’s hard to know when you’ve screwed up until it’s been pointed out to you. Often this is in the course of a fight or argument, which is hardly anyone’s brightest moment for considering the feelings of others. When you’re engaged in an argument you are naturally defensive and guarded; characteristics that don’t lend well to taking a step back and looking objectively at one’s actions or words. For instance, I recently made the decision, after some uninsured damage was rendered to my vehicle by someone kind enough to hit-and-run, that I would purchase a new car. Or at least a used car that would be new to me. My husband and I discussed it and with much reluctance he admitted that he could see why I had the desire to purchase: being a Real Estate agent it is somewhat embarrassing to meet clients in a dented up vehicle. We initially discussed a price point of below $5000.00, which I quickly found to be unrealistic when I began soliciting car lots only to be turned away with little more than a shrug and “We don’t have anything in that range.” Frustrated and intrigued by the possibilities rendered with a small pricing increase I raised my sights to vehicles around the $8000.00, a hefty increase but one that I still considered affordable. In the midst of my shopping my husband suddenly became irritable one week night. I figured that he had had a long day at work, but the next day I was met with the same attitude, and the next day more of the same. Finally I asked, exasperated, what had him so huffy, and I was met with a husband upset by my car shopping. Hadn’t we discussed this? I wondered. While he explained how he felt I had simply disregarded his feelings regarding pricing I became more and more upset. I’d asked before committing to these numbers, it wasn’t fair for him to go back on that and hold it against me! But as he explained the origins of his displeasure I began to see a much bigger picture than I was ready to admit. I had rather made this decision largely on my own, not considering the implications for us as a household. Less money from me means more money out of our household pot, which directly affects him. It’s hard to be objective about another’s feelings when you’re caught up in the heat of pursuing what you want, but in a relationship it’s a necessity.
