Recently, I found myself back on an online dating site popular with 20-something hipsters. I was ambivalent, having just ended a relationship. I went on a few dates with men who seemed interesting, but nothing was memorable. Just as I had decided to suspend my account for a few months, a gentleman whose username included “tattoo” and “bruiser” and whose profile boasted he was an interesting and nerdy 30-something began messaging me. His sense of humor and wit caught my eye, so we went out for coffee.

What ensued could only be described as tragic. He was an hour late, overweight, balding, divorced. He made nerdy look mild, and I found the whole afternoon to play out like a Shakespearan tragedy. On the way home, I stopped at the grocery store to pick up a bottle of wine which was promptly consumed. I had gone into the afternoon wondering if this offbeat man with the tattoos and beard could turn out to be a significant part of my life, only to realize minutes later that he would be a significant memory that was shared at cocktail parties when we talked about first dates.

Yet, I found myself thinking about this bad date. Sure, it was one of the worst dates I had ever found myself on, but it wasn’t necessarily bad. The gentlemen I met online simply didn’t live up to my expectations. I knew within five minutes the date would be our one and only, so I laughed at his jokes, listened intently to his stories, and found myself sincerely enjoying my cup of coffee that afternoon.

When we hugged goodbye I knew that I would never see him again. I wasn’t surprised when he didn’t call,and I didn’t reach out to him. To this day that was my worse online dating experience ever, but even that afternoon was enjoyable and humorous and I learned that even the worst date ever doesn’t have to be so bad.

There was once a time where people stayed away from online dating sites. In fact, they thought these sites were only for sexual predators looking for persons to prey on. Of course, these predators were males. But that can no longer be said of online dating sites; because everyone’s using them- your grandma, cousin, aunts, sisters, best friend and even high school teacher! Everyone wants to find love and why not, we all deserve to be happy and if that happiness can be found on an online dating site, why not give it a shot?

Over the past 10 years, there has been a significant increase in internet dating and women are the reason for this. A lot seek to find that perfect partner which is why they have embarked on creating dating profiles and proceeded to form long distance relationships with men they meet online until the time is right for them to meet in person. This has led to many marriages. Just look at the ads on television of the popular online dating sites such as eHarmony or Match.com; where couples share their story of how they met and when they got married.

Women are taking strides in finding the man of their dreams whether it is in person or online. If you are a single woman looking for love and about to give up- don’t! Not until you have tried online dating as you will never know, you may just find the man of your dreams. Women all over the world are doing it! You should too.

As women become more independent and in charge of themselves and their lives; being financially independent, becoming successful entrepreneurs, so are they taking charge of their love lives and if that leads them to online dating, then what’s stopping you?

Ethnicity Choices on Online Dating Sites

Everyone has their preference in partners and I believe they should exercise their right in choosing whomever they want to date and from whichever race that they may appear. But is this a fight against a certain race on online dating sites? I cannot help but wonder if this exists due to the amount of males that leave the African-American box unchecked as a choice for their future partner. Why?

It could simply be a coincidence or it can be a much more deep-rooted explanation for this occurrence. I believe it is highly possible that it is more than a mere coincidence. It has often been said that African-American women are listed at the bottom of the pack in terms of all the races combined, including the Native Hawaiian, Alaska Native/American Indian, White/Caucasian and Hispanic/Latino. But why has this happened?

I cannot begin to imagine why these results on online dating sites will show preferences in other races of women by a landslide. Could it be based on personal experiences of dating an African-American woman that has spoiled it for all other hopefuls or could it be that the persons seeking other races are also from other races themselves and which to remain dating within their races?

Whatever the reasons may be, it calls for a serious consideration on the part of all why this is so. One would hate to think that many are still trapped in mental slavery. A counter argument to this statement is the fact that African-American men have no problems in finding potential mates outside of their race during online dating. What are your preferences? Do you date within your race or prefer another race? If so, do you believe that there is a sad stigma attached to African-American women in this regard?

This may be due to personal privacy reasons or could simply be because the person is involved with someone else. Ideally, you may also want to find out if they have many profiles on different dating sites. This is a big red flag especially if they are being used simultaneously. Yes, a person may want to view all their options but do they really need to be on so many websites? I think not!

Another way you can find if your online date is a cheater whilst online dating, the person is aggressively private. Yes, an online dating site is a very public platform so if they constantly want to keep things extremely private so as others cannot tell that you are communicating with them; this is another red flag that you need to pay attention to. Any form of aggressive privacy raises an alarm and is a simple way you can tell your online date is a cheater.

Online Dating Leading to Successful Marriages

Normally the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of online dating are the horror stories: people posting fake profiles or using pictures that are not of them or are outdated as well as the more serious ones involving the police. But needless to say, there have been many successful relationships born on dating sites and of online dating. It takes time and precaution and it can be a wonderful thing, when you put yourself out there and can find a meaningful relationship in return.

With life, there’s always good and bad; it’s the natural order of things and that is how I look at dating sites, it has its good and its bad. The bad comes with the ability of people to easily mask their true identities and create a false image of themselves to get a date which can never result in a successful relationship as it has started on a dishonest path.

Then there’s the good side which exceeds all negative aspects that may ever come from online dating. The type of good where soul mates meet and get married, start a family and live a long, healthy life together. I can tell you stories of persons I personally know and have heard of how their online dating led to a successful marriage but that would take ages. But what I will focus on is the key lesson to be taken away from these scenarios, and that is honesty.

Online dating requires honesty in order for it to lead to a successful marriage. You have to be completely honest about what you are sharing in order to receive the same. It’s called good karma. This comes with true self-acceptance. Once you accept yourself for who you are, then you will have no problem being honest with whomever you meet; and once you continue being honest with that person, the sky is the limit!

Dating More Than One Guy – It’s Getting Complicated…

I am officially enamored with both of the men I’m seeing, each as separate entities. I say that because before I thought if they were combined, they would make the perfect man for me. Now, I think they are both great men that I would be happy settling down with. Of course, it’s way too early in the game to even consider that. I’m actually doing myself a disservice thinking so far into the future because I usually just jinx any sort of relationship that can come of these few dates if I think too much.

After I confronted the Handy Man about his odd behavior on our date, he admitted that in addition to not liking having to compete with other men for a girl, he is used to long-term relationships and gets close to people very easily. Not in a creepy sort of way but in the sense that once he meets a girl he clicks with, he’ll want her to be his girlfriend exclusively. This presents a problem, since I’m still hung up on the Banker. The Handy Man’s and my personality gel really well together and even though his gentlemanliness isn’t as clear-cut and apparent as the Banker’s, I appreciate that he desires a relationship and actually wants to prove he is loyal.

With the Investment Banker, I don’t feel as much stability. I love how chivalrous he is, but that is where it stops. He isn’t as open about what his intentions are with me as the Handy Man but at least we haven’t done anything physical that I might regret, and that might make me think this relationship isn’t headed towards exclusivity. I have a sneaking suspicion that he might also be seeing other people. He does have the pick of the litter, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he were in my exact position weighing his options. Who will tip the scale?

Dating The Doctor Again…

I’m still hurt from getting the cold shoulder from Outdoors Guy, so the doctor came to patch up my heart. (Lame, I know.) Ironically enough, we went rock climbing for our date. It was indoors, so I had less of a chance of running into him, thank God. I’d never been rock climbing and I was nervous to try it for fear of looking stupid. My internal conversation editing system was still in effect, and I believe I’d told the doctor before that I was somewhat athletic which is not true in the least. He will see that I have no upper body strength and wonder why I lied, I thought. I hate the white lies I have to tell because I obviously am interested! Maybe he does the same thing, because I’d never be able to tell anyway.

After a flash of over-analysis, I finally summoned up the courage to attempt climbing this rock. I got a third of the way up without the doctor suspecting anything! And it’s actually a very rewarding activity, which means sharing it with someone makes it even more enjoyable. Every time I got stuck, he’d cheer me on and I found even more strength. He admitted to me that he’d only done this a couple of times, so I got to cheer him on too. There were many victory fist bumps and half hugs, which I much appreciated after the hookup with Outdoors Guy. Maybe I should have made it clearer on my online dating profile that I won’t sleep with someone on the first date.

I was starting to feel warmth and camaraderie between us, which you wouldn’t think I would appreciate because I didn’t want to be friend-zoned. Honestly, if a friendship like this can sprout from an online dating site, then sign me up for more because I’m having a lot of fun.

Dating The Doctor – Next Installment…

For our second date, the doctor and I went to an indie record store to peruse their collection and sample some new music. It was like a montage from a romantic comedy. I love sharing my passion for music with other people who are just as passionate about it. When we were describing our favorite albums, we were so in tune with each other (pun intended). It was like something clicked and we totally understood each other’s languages. Needless to say, I was happy that we had scheduled a Part Two for the date: the movie. We went to a screening of The Room, which is an awful movie; so awful that it has a cult following. People make fun of each scene as it is being played, and audience participation is encouraged. Both of us had a few beers while watching the movie and it was the most hilarious movie experience I’ve ever had. I didn’t want the date to end!

So ensues the awkward “kiss” phase of the date. I know that this is definitely the right time to get it over with, but it’s always so hard when both people are sober. My past experiences with initiating kisses have always been heavily tainted with alcohol, I’m sorry to admit. As he was dropping me off, he came out of the car and hugged then pecked me goodnight. It wasn’t awkward, thank God, but it definitely left me wanting more. I’m not saying I wanted a make out session, but definitely more than just a peck. I knew we both had a great time, but thoughts of being “friend-zoned” crept into my head. I know that on his profile, he mentioned that he was open to meeting friends online too, and this sent me into a self-doubt tailspin. Time to turn to Outdoors Guy!

Online Dating Site First Impressions

On a typical night out with my friends, I don’t hear too many pickup lines. Most of the time, conversation just happens naturally. Unfortunately with online dating, conversation cannot happen naturally; therefore, most men resort to pickup lines. I’ve gotten countless messages telling me I look very familiar, that I’m too pretty to be looking for dates online, and one man straight up asked me to marry him. I’m not sure if these guys actually think they stand out, but it seems to be a strategy that they think will work. On the other hand, some of these messages just say “hi” and ask me “how are you today” or how life’s treating me. That’s way too little to go on! Like with any human interaction, I need something to interest me and reel me in. There needs to be a hook.

The messages that really got my attention were from the guys who paid attention to the content of my profile. I mentioned that I love sushi, that I’m big on the nightlife, and that I wish I were less materialistic. A handful of guys asked me where my favorite sushi joints were, which really hooked me. I immediately messaged back, because I am passionate about trying new restaurants and making recommendations to other people. I think it’s a really great, neutral way to start a conversation, and to build a friendship before meeting in person comes into question.

Honestly, feeding me compliments and assuring me that you’d be interesting doesn’t cut it. It’s more assuring to know that the guy has a brain to pick, so that I don’t end up on a date with someone ogling me speechless. In fact, there is a doctor who has been messaging me back and forth about friendly subjects including restaurants, weekend plans, and hobbies. He’s offered to meet up for sushi, and I just might say yes.

When I first began using computers my father had a stern conversation with me about safety online. Back then you didn’t provide your location, contact information or age to anyone you chatted with for fear of being sought out by a creep. Of course that was when I was 12 years old and internet dating was still considered extremely taboo. These days people are free with their information, logging their geographic location straight to their Facebook pages and posting everything from their employers to cell phone numbers without question of who might see them.

The internet has changed from what was once considered the Wild West into civilization, evoking in people a sense of trust for whomever they meet there that they have no ill intent. There are still plenty of predators online, however. When dating using online sites it’s unlikely that you’ll meet one, but it’s certainly not impossible. Use your common sense when navigating the online dating world. Don’t give out your physical address to anyone until you’ve met them face-to-face, in a public and safe location. Reserve your phone numbers for these same people. Communication through email should be sufficient until you’re more comfortable.

Likewise avoid meeting them at their place until you’re better acquainted. Never agree to meet for the first time in a remote or dark location. Like I said, it’s all pretty common sense. If someone proposes something that makes your Spidey sense tingle, it’s probably not a good idea. Still concerned about who it is that you’re considering meeting? Google them! One of the great things about the internet is the endless amount of information that’s right at your fingertips, and our newfound freedom of personal information spread about online means that you can find out a lot about your potential date without even having to hazard a question.
